This is what I am building. Converting a 1984 CJ8 to a 1955-1964 M-170 Ambulance/Troop hauler.
Front Line Ambulance Truck M-170 is designated as a special equipment vehicle as defined in AR 700-105.

I sprayed the engine, tranny & T-case with one can of 23070 OD. It's cold out so there is a little sheen to it because it's taking longer to dry. I am going to order more paint on Monday and start on the tub, I will give you before & after pics.

After: I think I have some stock valve covers for the 360, I have to look in my inventory.

I like it! Engine looks real nice in OD. :ya: That shade does not seem too brown. :bounce: What are you going to do with the shiny valve covers :bounce: Keep those updates coming. :bounce:

Change out the small pics for larger ones, my eyes are getting tire.

It does look tough w/the OD don't it. :bounce:

I have to check my inventory to see if I have a set of 360 vakve covers, I think I do, if so Ya think I should use them even though the performer intake will still be aluminum.......

Should I paint the Alt. OD also?
I want to leave the pully's black & the brackets black, what do ya think?

P.S. I just may have to put everyones name on this Jeep when I'm done getting ideas from the post. :bounce: :sneak:

No, paint it black. Look at a pic of my engine, it was done like if it came out of the factory.

Yes, it is correct and it looks great that way. :ya:

I prefer that you paint Peaches on the side of the M170 rather than my name. :ymca: :gun:

Jim, I have a pair of those tail lights that I got over the web. They are new without the lights on the back (and cost a lot less). I am going to adapt them for my Jeep someday (sounds like you and your fenders). I will bring them Friday night to show you.

Well I got the new Fording Kit for the M-170 build, the hose is on the way, it will be here shortly.

I did not seperate them yet but the black pipe is the air hose support pipe. The green pipe is the Fording pipe. The cap is for the top of the hose. All are NOS.

HERE is how/where the rear tail pipe hooks up to go under water:

Well I just recieved the gallon od OD & some spray cans, for the project, now I guess I can start on the frame. I just ordered a gallon of the red oxide primer & 3 spray cans. Boy you love spending my $$.

I wonder if a rust inhibitor will work w/their paint? I asked them & they always sandblast the Jeep since they are not near salt etc. They have heard of the Por-15 but they will not recomend anything with their paint. Hummmmmmm. :naughty:

I want to spread some in the holes & cut some metal off another Jeep to fill the voids.

Any ideas?

P.S. Pics to come later.

I'd say fix the holes and reinforce. Would not worry too much about the rust inhibitor if you have bare metal as if you put in a good 2 coats of the red oxide primer and their enamel it would be good enough.

They sell their stuff to most of the northern east coast guys where streets get salted. Hey, if you see it come back than use por15 on top of it because it needs rust to act on anyway. :biggrin1:

Sounds good Jim, thanks.

O.K. The frame is done, (it may have a little sheen to it, just painted but it drys fast). It took 2 1/2 cans & waiting on the primer to do the tub.
I sanded the black rustolem w/a scotch bright pad & got rid of the gloss. The pad took it down very well & the paint sticks great. I love this OD paint, touch up is a breeze.
The pics were took in the garage under floresent lights & w/a flash, the paint should look different out in the sunlight.
Next I'll work on the axles & springs.

Darn Rollbar,

It looks very clean, my hats off to you. Outstanding work, I gathered you could not resist and started painting on it today. The 2.5 cans, primer or paint :biggrin1:

Btw, the pics you have been posting lately are very clear and crisp, did you refill the lighter :tongue1: :dance1:

Two & 1/2 cans of paint, the black gloss rustolem was a primer etc. The paint feels hard on top of the rustolem. I bought 4 cans w/the gallon for touch up but U R right, I couldn't resist.

P.S. I use a propane/nos mixture for the lighter fluid now, works great, don't it.

Keep the rest of the cans for touch up, trust me you'll need it and it blends in very well... the magic of OD. :tongue1: Mix a small portion of your gallon batch and work of that as much as you can.

I'm already down to 1/3 can on the primer and 1 can left out of two of paint just on the oil pan, pulley bracket, Tcase and a few ends.

I'm doing the following:

Oxide Primer:
Light coat
Fill coat

Paint:
Light coat
Fill coat

Takes me 2 days. :dance1:

Still don't have a paint booth. :biggrin1:

I ordered a gallon of red oxide primer & three spray cans of the primer for hard corners that I can't get the big gun into. Rapco told me to mix the gallon of paint (OD) w/20% xyzlene. Do I mix the primer also?

P.S. Once I get every thing out of the garage it will be my paint booth.

P.S.S. B-4 U paint, wet the floor down & leave it wet while U paint, don't squeegee it dry.

If I tell you I would have to kill you. Actually I'm not sure  since I've only used the spray cans from them. I would say a call needs to be made, come back and let us know for future ref. You might want to post and update the OD paint thread information when it comes to using & mixing the gallon OD. :ya:

Well here are some more pics of the conversion, note the front spring hangers, these were in the rear but I'm using the rear springs up front. I even welded a brace on each side for strength, cheaper than the ones they sell & probably as strong. I built a set of springs for the back. I used yJ Sky Jacker spring & added some leafs for towing, towing air bags will be in the future, maybe. The tire carrier you see mounts on the roll bar of the Jeep, I think it will look good mounted w/the Military tire on it.

Here U go:
