Can anyone tell me which tires are one the jeeps in the pic after the ambulance...
The one with the guys at attention....
They have a V pattern to them.....

Those are Directional tires. Must be installed correctly. Best traction in forward only. The straight pattern are Non-Directional tires. Can be installed any way, They have the same traction forward or reverse.

Do not confuse the DUKW (or "Duck")from GMC (basically a deuce and a half under the hull) with the Ford GPA (or "seep" as it was jokingly called). The GPA is really a jeep under the hull. A little over 12,000 GPAs came out of the River Rouge Ford plant. GP, just like in GPW (the standard WWII jeep from Ford) stands for government production (the "G") and 80" wheelbase reconnaissance car (the "P"). Adding the "A" meant that it was amphibious. The "W" in GPW means that it was built to the Willys-Overland pattern.

Here's my Mighty Mite (M422A1). Built in '62, it has independent suspension front and rear with quarter elliptical springs, an aluminum body, an aluminum air cooled V-4 producing 55 hp and 90 lbs-ft of torque from 108 cubic inches, an aluminum transmission and tranfer case combination, modified aluminum Dana Spicer model 27 differentials, inboard mounted drums, and a 73 inch wheelbase. Hope you like. You can see it at the Orlando Jeep Club Show-n-Shine on Saturday the 18 of March at Courtesy Jeep in Casselberry. ('Sorry about the blatant plug for our show! :sneak: )

God, I hope not! Actually, it is rated at a 21 inch fording depth without the deep water fording kit and 60 inches with it. When you consider that the vehicle, at its topmost point, is supposed to be 59-1/2 inches high, I think it ought to be quite impressive to see only the snorkel heads sticking out of the water and a wake being produced by an unseen jeep!

Tonight, we tried to replace the ridiculously expensive and overly elaborate spark plugs. One of the originals was corroded in ways that add new meaning to the word. Unfortunately, the plugs we were able to get (of the three part numbers that I was told were good), are about an eighth of an inch too short and did not allow the rig to fire properly. So, I guess it will go onto the trailer tomorrow under human power instead of its own. Members of the club insist that they want to see it there, running or not, so I guess it's going. Club members' vehicles are not entered into our shows, so it will be "display only" and I expect to be explaining what people are looking at over and over, but that's ok. I've devised a new game for show-n-shines. For those jeepers tired of RTI ramps and balance beams, I figure the "Mighty Mite lift" should be fun. The object is to lift the vehicle completely clear of the ground and carry it from one parking space laterally to the next. The team that does it with the fewest people wins!

The Viet-Nam vet marine who lives behind me keeps offering to show me how he treated these things when he was "in-country". Yeah, that's ok, I'm good.

Wire cutters are a very popular "motor pool" addition to WWII jeeps but usually not seen after demilitarization, since rebuild depots tended to remove non-standard parts. The MBs or GPWs seen at the beginning of MASH are obviously left over from WWII, much as was most of the "rear area" rolling stock. My sister-in-law's father says that he even ate left over WWII rations while in Korea! YUM! Anyway, back to MASH: If you watch long enough, you'll notice just about every other jeep that existed at the time of the Korean conflict. We've seen CJ-2As, -3As, M38s, M38A1s, and CJ-3Bs. 'Quite a variety to look for! But, I guess with 11 years to its series' run, the MASH motor pool had plenty of time to work in every jeep ever made up to that time. At our show-n-shine yesterday, we got to talking about how many "war" movies made in the fifties and sixties used civilian models painted up to represent military stuff.

For instance, "Midway" used CJ-3As painted in Navy Gray Gloss. A friend of mine (a fellow member of the First Florida Chapter of the Military Vehicle Preservation Association) who lives in Winter Garden, owns one of the actual jeeps used in the movie. He is from the Phillipines where it was filmed and has all of the documentation to prove its use in the movie.

That might be an interesting thread. We ought to be able to bring up several improper examples of jeeps being used in movies. Anyone up for watching all of their old war movie DVDs?

Not too many people have ever seen the way they used to ship the Willys MB.
