M170 Military Ambulance

I am going to convert (somewhat) my CJ8 to look the same. I will use all the outside marking that are found on this Jeep. I found (through Jim B. & TheMajors help) a website that I can either buy decals or paint mask to paint the emblems, I will use the paint mask. In the rear of the bed of the Jeep I will use two bench seats, one on each side since I will have the 1/2 hard top (for now). I can get a full ragtop (which would look good w/the Red Crosses) but I want to see how it turns out first.
So here it is, the M-170 Front line Jeep Ambulance/Troop hauler, helping our Troops of yester year.

Have you decided what color shade OD you are going with Reason I ask is that a Gallon of good Galespy paint will run around $20 & $20 for the Hazardous shipping. I have a friend that has 8 gallons, (he purchased more than he needed). He is willing to let it go for $15 a gallon and around $12 shipping. Btw, Spray cans do not have the hazardous problem that liquid paint does. Don't ask me why.
His OD shade is 33070 which is prior 1943 but late 1941. If you want to get an idea of what it looks like, look at the YJ build up. If you have seen my Willys, this is also the shade. There are also darker shades and darker with brown in it. Call Rapco and see if they can send you a catalog with shades. They use to have a web site with all of this but it's under construction. They would also recommend your primer.
Here is another place that sells paint and parts, make sure is the Galespy paint.
Brent Mullins Parts
With regards to your rag top. What about just a top with rear and back windows or are you thinking to actually go all out and do the same as the M170 you posted

There are actually two fronts, that being one of them & a newer grill like the CJ's. The one like the CJ's doesnt have any rings & it look awesome. I am going to see what a modern grill looks like (painted) w/out the rings, hopefully the gap isn't to large from the headlight to the metal. Maybe I can get the bigger headlights to fill the void.
Here one w/a CJ 6 front grill.
The blue arrow is just the center bolt etc.
Hope this helps,
RollBar
P.S. U could do something like this (Military) w/your Jeep, if U wanted.

Heres what BMJP offers
33070 Lusterless Olive Drab-Your Willys.
24087 Semi Gloss Olive Drab
34087 Early WWII Lusterless Olive Drab
34052 USMC Lusterless Forest Green- This one here maybe to dark & it's not for the Army.

OD Paint to Compair, awesome write up, this would be a good post to copy over here w/pics etc.
I'm still trying to find a good match to the numbers U posted Jim but it looks like the 34087 Early WWII Lusterless Olive Drab wins it. Al's paint is closer but it is from down under.

Jim, I'll let U know about the paint. I want to try to get a paint for that yr. if I can.
What do you think?
Who ?-"Call Rapco"
I will keep the 1/2 hard top for now but I am really leaning towards the rag top look since it the Jeep will be a 1/2 & 1/2 DD. 1/2 garage, 1/2 DD/weekends or when I need a ride.
Thanks,

These guys are the main distributor who probably supply Brian Mullins. They carry the Galespy and the red primer.
Btw, I really think you are barking up the wrong tree with the 34087, this is a much lighter and mustard looking color. Speak with Rapco and tell them the year and model and see what number they give you. Get a price too.
Look below at this picture: The Willys in the rear is 33070, the one in the middle 319 post war and restoration paint is the one with more brown in it, the one in the front is the 34087 which is more yellow or mustard looking, more prone to stains.
I read the link and discussion on the OD shades. If you look at the NOS part that the guy is comparing it to... the 33070 looks like the correct & closest match, I don't know what these guys are looking at but from their own samples the 34087 is too light. Your M170 might have a more darker OD look. The restore or after war OD 319 had more brown to it. Put a pic up of the CJ8.
CJ5, nice ride, is your shade OD, can't tell from the pic, if it is what paint did you use

Jim, first of all how dare U post such nice pics for me to over, man those R sweet, brings back memories, .
Jim, I like the Willys color w/the star on the front bumper, the closer one. Is this the one that U say stains easy?
I want to find the correct color for the yr. I'm going with.
Do I have to use Red Primer as a base or can I use a regular primer? Why?
I have to make sure the yr. w/the regular (CJ) grill is a 55', not sure but it might be closer to the 60's model year. See this is where we need some historianes on this thread. :sneak:

Jim,
1. Do the axles get paint with the OD green?
2. My frame is black????????
3. My hardware (linkages, steering arms etc. are black) is black along w/my 1"BL. Do they need to be OD?
I would rather keep the black frame & linkages etc. & paint the axles OD. In two weeks I will paint the axles & re-convert them back to SUA.

Than if that is what catches your eye and makes you happy (it's your ride) you should go with this shade. I hate to break it to you but you are contradicting yourself. You like the 34087 but you say you want to find the correct color for the year. The 34087 is not, it was only displayed in 1941 to like Feb of 1942 or so. Your 1955 shade will be darker, maybe more so than the ones in the picture. Call Rapco and speak to them, have them send you a shade catalog. Bottom line is that if you like the 34087 than go with it.
Quote
Used the wrong term, what I meant is that since it is a more mustard OD color the fingerprint, etc smudges will be more predominant.
Quote
Call Rapco, it has to do something with bare metal and the OD color quality. This is what I remember reading and speaking with a few of the guys 2 years back. If you think it's a bunch of hogwash than use any primer.

Let me let you in on a secret. Back in the days everything was OD, they did not paint the face of the gauges because they had to see them. The wire linkages along with any moving part the had grease was the only thing left alone. Out of the factory the switches were still left so you can read them, that is until it came back to the motor pool for repaint. I would not sweat this too much, look at my pics to see what is OD or not, check some of the other pics on the net. Ultimately do what you like.
Btw, I've been going nuts myself over Xmas, (not big money). Items that I was missing like Mussette & Haversack bag, canteen, mess kit, blanket, an OD#3 Khaki tank top. Even found an M1943 Folding Shovels with carrier that paratroopers and infantry carried. I managed to find all of these with dates stamped on them, the guy made me a deal I could not refuse. Wait till you see my next display.

When you start on this project don't forget to take pics of what the CJ8 looked before you touch it.

We talked about this and from the pictures I sent you last you can probably go to Home Depot or any duct place and find what you need except for the hat. Keep calling the main part places. Don't forget the shovel under the hood, put it on the list.
Peach is an great name!
