I have a new printer I got in Nov of last yr and now I need to scan something but the only options are to scan to PDF/picture etc.

HP: DeskJet 1050 all-in-one J410 series.

I would like to scan a paper and change a few thing to fit my class/add to the document.

Any free programs out there that won't crash my PC

Thanks,
JimII

I did, and kind of wanted to know what the best/what others were using/had good results with.

I haven't tried the PDF to text part, but I use CutePDF to create PDF's, and it works really easy. The newest free version has the PDF to text converter as part of the free version.

There is a CutePDF toolbar that has the link to convert.

See if you can scan to OCR format? Most scanner software can do this.
You might need to install something like this http://www.simpleocr.com/

Here is the wiki article on OCR (Optical Character Recognition) if you want to know what OCR is.

^ what he said. When you scan it usually gets set as an image, even if it's a pdf it will be a picture and you can't edit the words regardless of what software you have. If you can scan OCR then you can edit using Word most of the time. Sometimes the characters don't turn out right on the scanned document, so be sure to proof it.

Well I have a new printer and it is a HP DeskJet 1051 w/a WIN7 64 bit PC.

When I scan a document it scans fine but always puts it in a JEG or picture type that I can not edit.

The one willy is talking about cost big $$.

I did download CUTE PDF but it would not convert. I tried different ones but they did the same thing.

My old printer would scan and then I could add/correct a document-I used TIF I think (Not sure what TIF is but it worked).

I tried TIF w/the new printer but it did not work.

I need something that will scan to WORD. The new printer does not give to many options.

I use to have the little icon to click to open up the scanner but now I have to do it manually.

I click scan and it comes up w/6 options (email, PDF, TIF, etc) of which none work the way I need it to.

I'm almost ready to put the old printer back but the ink is so expensive.
