What a sweet vehicle... another build up with pictures. :bounce:

Please due the round conversion on the headlights, she does not deserve this.

If you round it, might take the sweetness of the old look away though. :ya:

Here is what is behind the square headlights/grill. I want to put the old school center grill on and leave the ROUND lights exposed. Looks really sweet-if I can find a center grill.

This is called the Gladiator Grill.

I kind of like it.

If you can't get that one go with the Rhino Grille. :ya:

Now I'm convinced that you need to get rid of the squares. :2thumup:

I'm going to move this topic to the Vintage Corner forum.

I think it is sweet. She said :nono: to OD :empathy: she wants a nice head turner color. Yes that grill is nice, 400 bucks for their kit but I know a guy in S.C. who has a backyard full of FSJeeps and I will PM him when the time comes. I told you the squares have to go, IMHO, but the War Dept, hummmm, :nervous: :cry1:

Need help for: T-case Identify and Trans/Axles and other?

The stuff you see under the Jeep is called cotton. We have trees here that put off a lot of that stuff and it is flammable. It should come off w/a pressure cleaner.

Thanks again for all the help,
Jim

IIRC, the trans is a TH400 w/ a Jeep bolt pattern on the bellhousing, it will not swap w/ a GM TH400 housing. The T/C is a chain drive Dana 20. THE axles should be Dana 44's.

Someone told me it is a 727/219 T-case. The T-case is Aluminum so it can't be a D-20 unless they made one for the J series.

I have to pressure clean the underside so we can see better.

also found this

If it's really an '80, then it will have a chain-drive New Process transfer case with driver's side drop, a NP208 with a manual trans or a NP219 with an automatic. A J-10 will have a D44 front and a M23 rear; only the J-20 has the D60, and only with 8 lugs. With a 360 in a J-10 it will have either a TF727 or a T-176. The J-20 will have the T-18.

Thanks, it has the AMC 360; NP219; 727; AMC23 Rear from what I can see. But after pressure cleaning it I will be able to maybe read some tags/info/clear pictures to be 100% correct.

Thanks,
Jim

I took the smog pump off and brackets so far.

Need to buy 8 bolts to fit the exhaust manifold where the smog stuff was, then on to the rest of it.

I put some MMOil in each cylinder to loosen up the rings just in case.

Took off the cut power steering hose and did a few other things.

Next to do a compression test (not sure if I will get an accurate reading w/wet cylinders).

Then gunk it (Royal Purple) and pressure clean it.

* Need some help on this one:

I'm going to change the oil before I crank it (been sitting and it is black). Holds 5 Qts.

I'm thinking 3 Qts of oil and 2 Qts of Marvel Mystery Oil to help loosen up some stuff - OR - 4 qts of oil and 1 Qt of MMOil.

What say ye!

was the motor seized or did it turn freely  if it turned freely change oil and start it , :nervous: if it misses, knocks or blows excessive oil then start to worry. :rof:

my old 68 firebird sat since 1991 changed battery, oils, fitters, water pump, fuel pump, wheel cyl, master cyl, wiper blades and of course tires. (basically anything that was rubber and could fail)started and drove :drive: to PGH this year and presented to my son for graduating as an Engineer from Penn State :equation:

No it is not seized. Ran when it was parked and I bumped it once w/the starter/no problems.

Maybe I will add 1 Qt of MMOil and drive it around/let it idle.

We are going to work on it today.

Thanks Doc,
Jim

Ok most of the smog stuff off.

MMOil sat in the cylinders over night.

Today I cranked it over to get most of the MMOil out of the cylinders.

Have oil pressure.

Getting ready to put three gallons of gas in the tank and fire her up.

Not 100% sure there is old gas in the tank but after 2.5 yrs + in the heat of NV I"m sure it evaporated.

Not sure if the tank leak has been fixed but will soon find out.

Will update later.

Put some premium in the tank (4 gallons) and got her running again. She idled for a long time then when the (somewhat) high idle released she started to die. The temp was at normal and after normal temp the oil pressure was 38psi idle. 40 cold. No leaks at the carb so I guess the seals swelled after sitting for so many years. Maybe I need to adjust the carb and go from there. More continued-stay tuned.

I put 4 gallons of premium in the tank and I'm sure some junk was in it. New filter and it ran until the high idle stepped down. I think the filter clogged after 25min of run time.

So I will drop the tank and swish it around w/the fuel in it and install a new sender.

Question(s):
1. Should I put some Stay-Bil in the tank to help loosen it or just swish it around w/the new fuel in it?

2. Does the J-10 have a circuit board for the gauges or wires like a regular Jeep?

3. If the circuit board is bad, where can I get a new one?

Thanks again,
Jim
