My son want to update his iPhone firmware, he comes and asks...
Will I lose my game data points, levels, etc.
Since I don't play games I told him that as long as he makes a backup to iTunes first, does not delete the app from the phone and restores from the back up he should be ok.
I would hate for him to come and cry later for losing all his data on the update. I hope I was right. Someone told me that iCloud saves data as well, I had this shut down but if it does might not be a bad feature to turn on.
Can anyone confirm if I was correct in what I told him.
What about doing a firmware update from the phone itself rather than going through iTunes

I know from experience that what you told him is correct. I update my iPod and my iPad every time there is a new firmware. And still have all my game info.
But I always do the updateing through a computer. So I don't know about if it is done on the device itself.

Thank you for confirming. Last night we did it through iTunes. Made sure the apps he wanted was on his phone, made a backup, updated. All was there including his game data. Did not even ask me to restore from a backup and surprisingly it was a fast update.

As far as I know a part of the updating process is aiming a back up, the it will automatically restore it from the back up.

Jim was this update done via the the new iOS5 update process from the phone itself? If so than that is why it never asked to restore. It updates the firmware without loosing data. I did it to my wife's phone my iPad 2 and my daughters iPod Touch

Actually I did it through iTunes. The funny thing is that there were 2 versions of 5.0.1 (405 and 466).
I updated all the phones to 406 and now that they recommend to be in 405 because there might be an unlock in the future I took and installed 405 on all the phones and it now asked me to restore from the backup file.
I guess 406 version might plug a hole that they see for a future unlock.
Btw, I did notice a tiny bit of battery improvement on 406, too early to tell on 405 but it should be the same.
