just happened yesterday. i have been driving it more as the weather has been so nice (and i blew the motor in my DD 3 weeks ago). filled it up with gas...pulled out...drove 50 feet and boom-clack-clack-clack-clack-clack. ever since the second hydro-lock, it's had a minor ticking sound that just wasn't right. my guess is that i bent the rod just ever-so-slightly at that time. with that minor bend/bow, the engine still ran and ran like a champ at that. i'm guessing the vibration spun the #1 rod bearing...broke the connecting rod and the rod just spun around like a machete and took out the bottom end of the motor. the block is definately cracked (you can see it in pic #2). per usual, good hearted jeepers have already found me a rebuildable block that was running when pulled, but has a bad head. we'll do a rebuild on that one and swap my good parts over. the harmonic balancer, ps pump, alternator, idler pully, ignition, starter and several other items have already been replaced so i'm a bit ahead of the game in that regard. not gonna happen at a fast pace, but i'll begin a rebuild and hope to see you guys out on the trails at a later date...

Dave this is a 4.0 and the crack in the head was welded-I put in a new gaskit and it may not leak at all. the intake maninifold was adapted to a use a carb but all you need to do is change manifolds so it is fuel injected. Use this engine till you get yours rebuilt. The motor came out of a cherokee Once you get your motor rebuilt you will have spare parts or pick up a head somewhere and you'll have a spare motor--I know you'll need one SOONER or later!
