ever since i was a little kid i've wanted an army Jeep, more specifically a Willys MB and a M38A1 (so i'm a bit of a dreamer) but there's no way i can have one in the foreseeable future (unless my grandpa's friend gives me his M38A1 :ya:), at least not in this house since there's nowhere to store it. and since money's tight now i know i won't be out-performing any of the bigger Jeeps here so i figured i'd mod just for looks right now. some of you might remember my hood and doors have been olive drab for a while now. well i finally got off my *** and finished the OD paintjob and started on the military markings.
here's a photoshop of what my desired* end result will look like
*one day...

DAY 1- Prep and underpainting

worked from about 11:30AM to sundown. it was literally like watching paint dry

mock-up and base coats
Posted Image
dad doing his specialty- he does fine art for a living
Posted Image
not too bad for coat #1

done with "The Beast Below" moving on to the pinup girl (my favorite part :baby: )
Posted Image
forgot to make stencils for the dash :good:

TRICK FOR DOING STENCILS: cut up a strip of refrigerator magnet to hold the paper down and prevent "excess" over-spray beneath the stencil

getting there...

hood lettering done

end of day 1
Posted Image

the explanation behind the hood numbers and name (since you're probably dying to know)
GP- "general purpose", what we owe the "Jeep" name to
H8- pronounced either "H-Eight" or "hate" depending on how you look at it. it's from a song by my favorite band
147- last 3 digits of the barcode on the back of this guy's head http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agent_47 . it was originally gonna be "040147" but i didn't have room, so i cut it a bit.
The Beast Below- episode title of a Doctor Who episode (British scifi tv show) where the whole UK is strapped to the back of a giant "star-whale" (although they don't know it's a creature under the "ship").
A horse and a man; above, below. One has a plan, but both must go. Mile after mile; above, beneath, One has a smile- and one has teeth. Though the man above might say hello, Expect no love from the beast below...
In bed above we're deep asleep, While greater love lies further deep. This dream must end, this world must know- We all depend on the beast below...

thought it was a neat idea since i really DO depend on "The Beast Below" since it's my DD!

i plan on showing it to my grandpa's friend (Vietnam vet i believe, or Korean war; the guy with the M38A1) to see what he thinks of it. my original idea was to just have a bad*** MB style Jeep, but the more i thought about it the more i wanted to do it the "right way" so it seems like more of a tribute to our vets instead of some ******bag punk disrespecting the Army (i'll get a bullhorn for when i want to be a ******). i'm also doing it to pump-up a friend of mine who's joining the Marines this august and another friend of mine in the Air Force.
now if only i could find cheap spice full soft doors and a great condition spice soft top to buy/trade...

more pics to come tomorrow after day 2 :strong2:

:flower2:
thanks for the kind words

i just realized i forgot to spray the tire pressure stencils. one more thing for tomorrow. it sure is time consuming getting these colors to be opaque, and the white base coat takes a few coats before you stop seeing green under it. good thing home depot's about 1500ft away :tongue1:

no pink parts in sight though (i know you, willy and jack are particularly fond of pink...)

cmon, Brian even the US Gov knows round headlights are better. that's why they never used the YJ!

didn't get to finish the pinup girl today as it looks like rain and dad went golfing. i did put the top on and i'm liking the way it looks. i'm also looking into that fabric/vinyl paint at the auto parts store that's supposed to be made for soft top fabric (duplicolor i think). sprayed the stars on the doors and TP25 above/near the wheel wells (Tire Pressure 25psi. gotta love the military's almost idiot-proof ideas :kayak:). touched up the D-rings on the back from 'polished' to OD. ready to go for a drive today and see the looks i get mall crawlin' .

top up with doors
Posted Image
Posted Image

TP25 (what looks like overspray on the hood is actually just some kind of dried oil, most likely from bird **** ;). the "splotches" near the door star are just bits of OD drying after a touch up)

Nice work George. Just don't make it so pretty you won't want to get it dirty. Pink is only a fun color when it's on someone else's parts. :kayak: And just remember, those YJs are the ones pulling you out of the humps.

day 3 over. finished most of the pinup girl and ran into a little issue. the paint we mixed dried pretty quick, so next time we have to mix a new batch for the shadows, which may or may not take a whole lot of time. i'm gonna be testing different clear coats to see which one is the least visible and most durable, then mask around the girl and lettering and spray a real thick clear coat to protect it from branches on the trail. i'm thinking after a few years when this girl gets damaged enough from the beating she'll take on the trail ( ) i'll either mask off and spray it myself or take it to one of those "ricer custom shops" and have them airbrush it with a real thick poly clear coat.
i also found the rims i'm gonna be using (way in the future when i have to replace my 31"s) http://store.cokerti...er-wheel-4.html 5x4 1/2" bolt pattern. gonna paint 'em OD green too.

try to keep your hands out of your pants :2:

The never used the YJ because they found it was good exercise for troops to push their Jeeps around instead of drive them.

i don't think i've ever been to Hallandale, and it's been months since my last walmart visit- which means there's another military OD Jeep running around somewhere

little update- new tires from YJay92. 33" mud kings. i also put the front flares back on but have plans to make flat-style fenders by mixing the MB and M38a1 style. i also need to get in touch with TranyDoc to see who painted his doors since i want to move the girl to the front body panel where the Jeep marking is (and change the name to something shorter). not having rear flares sucks :strong2:
