received this yesterday...

Quote

July 21, 2009 – The National Park Service has published the Draft General Management Plan/Wilderness Study/Off-Road Vehicle Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement for the Big Cypress National Preserve’s Addition in Florida. The Addition consists of approximately 128,000 acres northeast of the original preserve boundary and approximately 18,000 acres along the western boundary. The proposal, which will be the Addition’s first comprehensive management plan, will direct the management of the Addition for the next 15 to 20 years. The preferred alternative would designate up to 140 miles of OHV trails, which would be phased in as part of the primary OHV trail network. Secondary OHV trails could be designated only in the OHV trail corridors and other backcountry recreation areas comprising approximately 52,431 acres or 36% of the Addition. A maximum of 700 ORV permits would be issued annually for the Addition. Additionally, 85,862 acres of land would be designated as wilderness.

Comments on the proposal will be accepted until September 30, 2009. It is important that OHV enthusiasts get involved in the designation process by contacting Park staff. Comments may be submitted online at www.nps.gov/bicy or by mail to:

Big Cypress National Preserve Planning Team

I want to be there but with my brother-in-law on vacation I have to be at the shop until we close at 6PM. Earliest I could be there, best case scenario, would be 6:30PM/6:45PM. I will call you guys tonight to see if it is worth making the trip.

Yes, I'm planning to leave work around 3pm and go straight there.

Do you know which room it's in? If not I'm sure the front desk can direct me.

I'm going to the Naples meeting tonight. Were you able to speak and voice your opinion? Was it a show and tell or a 3 hour lecture?

In order to speak, you had to sign a sheet before the meeting. It was a pretty good meeting.

Yes, you have 2 opportunities to express your feelings at a podium for all to hear (it is being video recorded and they have a stenographer there, too)..........but the time is limited by the number of people who want to comment. Usually 2 to 3 minutes.

They have an hour "breakout" where you can talk to the NPS personnel........ask questions, make comments,
leave written comments at the end of the meeting. etc.

One good point that was brought up was that there are 2 meetings on the west coast of Florida (Everglades City
and Naples) but there was NO meeting for Broward County residents, unless they want to travel to the other
meetings........and they may try to schedule a meeting there.

There is still a 79 day window to express your feelings and concerns. We will review at the SFJC meeting.
