Well my tower (XP) burn't up. I plugged in a Ipod (Zenn) as I usually do and after about 5min a icon popped up. OVERLOAD on USB port. I was able to close everything out and navigate, the screen froze but then unlocked and things were fine. I did smell a burn't smell and powered down to re-start the PC. Now the PC starts but nothing shows on the screen. I hooked another screen up and it said NO SIGNAL. I took the cover off & where the screen plugs in at, it's connected to the mother board so I don't know what is going on. :naughty:

Time for a new'puter. Save the hardrive form the burnt out one as the info may be able to be saved.

Ya, it turns on but the screen won't show. 5yrs old. would be nice w/dual HD's. All I need is a tower etc. Just don't know what to build if I build one. The basics work for me and I'm wondering if I can get the XP version again

tigerdirect.com

Do you have the XP operatiing system as a separate disc yourself? If so click here.

If not, click here.

I would suggest getting a dual core, 2 gigs ram, big a hard drive as you can afford, and, if you're a gammer, a good video card.

XP will not see more than 2.5 GIGs, so if you are going w/ XP, don't go crazy on the RAM.

Thanks Ian, I'll look. I do have a upgrade to XP=home version for my old PC but the HP came w/XP.

Not a gamer but maybe I can post some thing here to look at. I am going to look @ Best buy/CCity etc. I just need a tower.

Thanks,

Ian, what is the gaming thing all about, better video, faster. I mean if I'm not a gamer then would it still benefit me?

You may just need a new video card.

Mostly better video. If you don't do the on-line games w/ high tech video, then you can get by w/ the on-board video that the motherboard comes with.

The upgrade won't get you the operating system.

Compare specs as i ahve found Tigerdirect to be the less expensive all around. You can get a decent tower starting at $350 or so.

Thanks, mine is a HP A705W XP home premium. I will take it to some one & have it checked but my HD is almost full @ 40 gig's  = 6gigs left. Mine started w/256 & I upgraded to 1gig of ram. Just a basic XP Home PC.

I would like to get something around 250 but just needing the tower, that is a lot. I'll look @ the links.

I did notice when I took the cover off the tower that there is a nother plug for a HD. If I do get another PC tower can I just pull my HD & use the old one for the programs I have and the new HD for additions or how does that work.

Maybe if U all are going on the outing on the 25-27 someone could stop by, WILLY

That's not too bad in price, I just have a hard time w/ refurbished units. You never know what was wrong.

As for the dual harddrives, you have to have one as the slave, and one as the master. If you look on the harddrive there is a picture (generally) of where the jumper needs to go to make it a slave. The jumper prongs are on the rear of the harddrive next to where the cables go.

All the programs that I have are on the C drive, with the secondary harddrive as my data storage. MOst virasus' a and trojans work on the C drive. I canreplace the softwware, I may not be able to replace the data.

Do you hear the normal boot sounds as well as the XP sounds?
Look at the capacitors near the CPU and see if they are bulging. They should be flat on the top. I have had MB fried on me with the same symptoms.

No sounds, tried another monitor & :rof: says no signal. I'll reboot and listen. Smelt bad but no flames.

I'll let some one look @ it but then they will have access to all my info & I'm real anal about that, that is why I usually buy a new one. I'm like Ian, I have never bought a re-furbished one but times are hard and they should be ok after the factory tune up.

I can get your stuff off your HD if you need or you can get yourself an adapter for either IDE to USD or SATA to USB depending on what type of HD you have.
I have this one but it is for SATA drives.

This one is USB to both EIDE/IDE or SATA

All you do is remove you HD from your fried PC and connect it to your new PC and copy your stuff out.

OK, here is the inside of the PC. Note the phone card only. On the bottom right U will see the grey cord, that is where the USB plugs into. No capacitors are burnt or bulging. I guess its on the M-Board. How much R MB's, almost as much as a new PC??

Like I said in the past Admin we need a special forum just for Rollbar's techsupport

By the way it looks like your HD are IDE because of the wide ribon cable so you need the IDE interface I linked above

I wonder if what smelled was your zune. If you get no sound beeps or any post beeps it is not good. If you video card were to be bad I think you should still here the beeps and XP startup sound.

Yep, a SEAGATE  w/the wide ribbon.

Also, there was something CHOKING the PC down for the internet speed, ay the modem it was 6.0 but @ the PC it was 1.5-3.0. Would this be in the HD or on the PC it's self. I don't want to contminate anything new.

When I turn it on, nothing, fans run etc. but I can't see anything & not sure if it's up to the loging or not, my son is in there and I will fire it up and let it sit for 5min & he will listen.

I need to change my screen name.

yeah but the OS will not boot without many errors because your existing PC it not the same hardware. You can use the HD as a secondary HD on the E-Machine. As long as the E-Machine is running XP you will be ok.

I am off to dinner so will most likely not respond as frequent if at all tonight. Wedding Anniversary Dinner. 14 Years Married. Goblin, his wife, my wife and I are going to Chart-House restaurant in Miami.

How much to build me a smokin PC tower.
