Eventually it'll get crummy again, but it makes install go easier when we're dealing with clean parts. :vacumm:

Called my local NAPA store today to get that HD 70 amp

Posted Image

(and other) relays today and they had no idea what I was talking about. I did my best to describe that photo that Rollbar :thumbsup: posted but they want a part no. Is anyone familiar with that relay? It appears to be 4 lug with a 1/2 inch primary lug the other three standard 1/4 inch.
Checked with my buddy that used to ride a Sporty but it was a kicker, so no luck there.
Any info would be greatly apprecited.
Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid!
Gus

;) Don't sweat it Rollbar, I get caught up with other stuff too. I'm just grateful for your excellent post on this!
I stopped by the local shop that's bailed me out a few times and within 3 minutes he got one ordered that'll arrive in a couple hours. Hurrah for 'old school' folks that now how to look up stuff in books!

Well got that relay in as promised and it looks like the 70/80 amp pictured but the shop favors Carquest and this was made in China. :no:
I've (as many others have had) issues with made in China auromotive parts before. On the other hand this is only a relay. I'm thinking either it will work or it won't, being electrical. I'm certain there's bound to be holes in this idiom but given this consumer desert I live and work in, it's the best there is available locally. I'm not going to start the well known rant about the internet shopping being the bane of local shops but in this area it's had it's full effect.
Going on the hunt for a pigtail for this relay today and if all fails I may go with a Hella unit I found yesterday on Amazon, much as I hate to do it. My link

Began my search for the high speed and low speed relays. First approaching the local NAPA I explained that I needed at least a 70/80 amp relay. Their response was a blank stare followed by thier response "we have relays". Okayyyyy how about 70/80 amp relays. They didn't know. So I went to the Ford dealer in town and gave them the rundown on the vehicle this fan came from; '98 Merc Mystique 2.5L V6 with A/C needed a 70/80 amp cooling fan relay. The same blank stare ensued. After about 10 minutes of tippy tapping on his computer he said he found one that might work but he couldn't find any amperage information, number of pins or their assignment, remarking that this '98 is obsolete !
Now, being a former Marine I now about obsolescence, for my first two years I was stationed at MCLB Barstow where, when an old jeep, truck or tank arrived at the rail dock, job #1 was to send a bunch of privates with rattle cans of olive drab to paint out the white star.
Disgusted I returned to the boneyard and pulled some wiring and found these two relays;

Can anyone tell me if these are the correct relays for the Contour/Mystique fan setup? and if so, where inline does the oversized green on go?

Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid!

Here's the diagram showing where I think they go. Any ideas? anyone? I'm getting right frustrated, the local FORD DEALERSHIP can't even tell me. :banghead1:

Failure to learn about this 5 bladed green relay I may be going with store bought IF the vendor can tell me they're rated for 40 amps! Man, if I were as inept as some of the local vendors are I would've been sent to the infantry by the command, despite my contract for truck driver.

Went back to the boneyard looking for a bank of relay sockets (small footprint) and I found two more 70/80 amp relays for free with a more contemporary number;

I scanned several vehicles for small footprint relay pods, but so far those that take Bosch style relays are 6x9" and larger.

I got the socket and the two 9.5mm~0.375" female spade connectors stuck in pretty well, since I lost my soldering gun in the move, I had to rely on my butane micro torch. The soldering was on the sloppy side which when pressed with needlenose pliers the connectors are holding fast.
But do you think within 50 miles or even on the net I couldn't find the connector in this side with the catch to hold fast in the connector?

:2thumup: FOUND (maybe) An Amazon reseller had a bag of 50 Hella (.375/9.5mm) 10 gauge connectors NOS so I snapped 'em up. I'm dubious if they're the real deal or not but if they are with all the leftovers I'll have I'm going to offer them free + shipping to anyone else that's in a similar jam. Kameraden! :grouphug:

...and I have more faith in Czech manufacture than that of China. Also as I've promised on more than a couple forums if anyone else is building these relay sockets drop me a line and I'll mail you enough of these (2) to get your fan project going on this 70/80 amp relay!

The Hella (.375/9.5mm) 10 gauge connectors I'm giving away if one can renumerate postage (2) connecotrs each. As for the other photos I intended to display the part nos. available (at least in this consumer desert). I had one heckofa time finding 70/80 amp relays out here.
