What do you all use to on the trails? Perhaps this can hint to all of us what might be good to bring along for the Ocala trip. :devil:

I carry a CB which is the choice of the masses. I would prefer vhf marine band which is super clear, no noise, better range... but try convincing the masses to switch and spend the money is another story. :2thumup:

Forgot, we have 2 small prs radios for when the wife and kids have to get out of the vehicle, that along with the war dept saying her piece privately if I get too out of hand on an obstacle. :ya:

If all of the above fails.... we yell! :boo:

CB is what I use. Seems to be the primary method. Jim, I like the idea of the personal radios for you and Dolly. Need to remember that for when my wife joins me on the trails.

Talkin to Florida Wildlife Officer guys, they primarily use VHF radio. Now ive always used CB but i was thinking about switching over to VHF because my two really expensive piece of crap antennas snapped. Its almost worth buying a new radio but whats the point if no one else exept for the cops are using it.

Use a spring connector at the base of the antenna. It will give as you hit alien objects :2thumup:

No it was more like, one of em, some little punk @$$ snapped it when i was at the mall and left a note saying "f-you". still dont know who it was. :boiling:

Second one was ripped off by a car wash after a long nite of being stuck and i knew that id be too tired to wash it in the morning so...well the spinning things on the side went around back and wrapped the fiberglass whip around it and snapped it like a twig. Them things are strong too!.

Damn car washes

I have go the k40 fiberglass antenna, it has a lifetime guarantee. I bought it at bell's cb. The antenna broke a few years ago, I picked up the piece that broke brought it back to bells and they replaced it for free with a new one. I had to pay to have it tuned again but the antenna was free.

Bells is the Best CB shop in at least 3 states. All the truckers go there. I dont remember the address but it is off Commercial Bvld, just EAST of the Railroad tracks, take first street to North and its about 100 yards or so down from Commercial. john

Some people will tell you to just install your own CB. Do not listen to these people, run as fast as you can.. Other wise yo will end up like I did. :boiling: :innocent:

Very Uncool. I tried to install my own cb and save some money. I couldn't receive a transmission if you were 2 feet away from me. Just go to bells. :innocent:

Well ive done my own since ive ever used CB, and even before and afer ive used my old linear amp, i could transmit from here to PGA which is a good 30-40 miles. Thats a 4 watt maxon wal-mart cb with dual 4 ft fibreglass whip antennas.All for about $85 and no No amp. Its been done on a clear night with not much AM transmission in the air. Both non amplified mobile stations.

Either im damn good, or im lucky. Id say damn good. :sneak: :banghead:

Out of everything I've read, all you need is a foot above the plane. Meaning a foot above the highest point of the vehicle being hard or soft top. You also need a good ground and most important to set your SWR with a meter that you can buy at Radio Shack or wherever.

What I did was to install my CB and the base of the antenna mount where I wanted. I then went to Bells, purchased the antenna from them (I've replaced it once already :banghead:

) and had them set the SWR. Have no problems on the trail. :innocent:

I did have a loose connection which caused a problem last year but it was my fault. :innocent:

I've install a CB & set my own SWR in our RV and it does very well on the road. It came with a roof antenna from the factory.

I always have the phone number of someone at the camp and someone on the trail..and I carry a CB....

What we need now is a poll on what communications we would prefer to use. I have used marine VHF and really like it. I could also go for Ham radio if it was prefered.
Rayne, quite offen our telephones don't work on the trails as we are too far from antennas.

It's illegal to use marine VHF for this purpose. I have both a 2m ham radio and a CB in my Jeep and in all the offroading I've done, I probably use the ham radio less than 5% of the time I use the CB. CB is the standard radio for offroading so far as clubs and organized events go with ham radio, if used at all in the particular event, as a secondary radio. :whistle:
